After Slashing Medicaid, The GOP Is Now Arguing Over How Much To Cut Food Stamps

After taking a meat ax to Medicaid – a program that more than 70 million American rely on – in their most recent version of health care legislation, Republicans are now reportedly arguing about how much to go after food stamps.

According to The Huffington Post, there is a “nasty feud” over how much to cut Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) within the GOP.

House Republicans had planned to finally introduce a budget Wednesday ― already months behind schedule ― but then announced they are punting to July because they can’t reach agreement on spending levels overall and cuts to food stamps specifically.

 

A further delay on a budget bill could forfeit much of the Republican agenda. They need the spending outline in order to be able to use a parliamentary procedure called “budget reconciliation,” which would allow them to do tax reform with only 50 votes in the Senate. So if they can’t agree on how much to cut food stamps, they won’t be able to cut taxes ― a priority for Republican leadership.

That’s right – the entire GOP budget now hinges on whether Republicans can resolve their argument over how much to cut food stamps in order to fund a giant handout to the wealthiest income earners.

How many Americans should be unable to feed their families just so taxes can be lowered for the wealthy? That’s essentially the question they’re asking themselves now.

At this point, Republicans in Congress – emboldened by the bully in the White House – are no longer trying to disguise how they feel toward lower and middle-income Americans.

Not only are they fighting to cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires, which does not provide the type of trickle-down, economic benefits they have spent decades telling the country it does. But they are showing that they have no problem openly doing it on the backs of Americans who rely on programs like Medicaid and SNAP to survive.

The Republican agenda isn’t just full of bad policies that will hurt the economy, but it will literally prevent people from staying alive.
