Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers confirmed to special counsel Robert Mueller that Trump also asked them to deny that he was under federal investigation which Comey’s account of the reason why he was fired by Donald Trump.
CNN reported, “Two of the nation’s top intelligence officials told Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team and Senate investigators, in separate meetings last week, that President Donald Trump suggested they say publicly there was no collusion between his campaign and the Russians, according to multiple sources. Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers described their interactions with the President about the Russia investigation as odd and uncomfortable, but said they did not believe the President gave them orders to interfere, according to multiple sources familiar with their accounts.”
It doesn’t matter for the obstruction of justice investigation related to Comey of Rogers and Coats believed that Trump was giving them an order or not because they were not running the federal investigation into the Russia scandal. The question at the heart of the Comey firing is, did Trump fire Comey because he would not drop the Russia investigation? What Coats and Rogers told the special counsel is evidence that the President was meddling in the investigation.
The statements by the DNI and NSA Director aren’t good news for Trump. They don’t clear him. They strengthen the motive behind why James Comey was fired from his job as FBI Director.
