Sarah Jones and I preview tonight’s results:
Dave Wasserman on the percentages that Ossoff needs to hit in order to win:
Remember: to win #GA06, Jon Ossoff (D) needs about 61% in DeKalb, 50% in Fulton & 43% in Cobb.
— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) June 20, 2017
This *might* mean he needs about 67% of the early vote in DeKalb, 56% in Fulton & 49% in Cobb. But we can't know that for sure. #GA06

Update: 7:09 PM ET: Michael McDonald warns that early voting numbers won’t look quite as overwhelming for Ossoff as more Republicans voted early:
When we get the #GA06 early vote dump, expect them to be much worse for Ossoff than the 1st round. More Reps voted early in 2nd round
— Michael McDonald (@ElectProject) June 20, 2017
But Nate Cohn of The New York Times says the mail-in vote will lean heavily Democratic:
The mail vote is going to throw people off. It's quite D, reports late and it's tough to tell if it's in if you're not looking at right data
— Nate Cohn (@Nate_Cohn) June 20, 2017
Update: Polls stayed open until 7:30 PM in two locations in DeKalb according to the AJC. “DeKalb County officials have received permission to extend voting hours at Livsey Elementary and in Embry Hills at Holy Cross Catholic Church until 7:30 p.m. tonight. The half-hour extension came after both locations experienced problems this morning with checking voters in.”
Update 7:35: Handel leads Ossoff 51.4% to 48.6%.
Update 7:38 PM ET: Karen Handel wins the in-person early vote in Fulton County:
Handel wins the in-person early vote in Fulton–that's not a bad sign for her.
— Nate Cohn (@Nate_Cohn) June 20, 2017
Steve Kornacki says early vote loss in Fulton is an ominous sign for Ossoff:
Ominous sign for Ossoff: He prob needs close to 50% in Fulton to win – got 48.6% there in the early vote, where he's supposed to be stronger
— Steve Kornacki (@SteveKornacki) June 20, 2017
Update: Democratic strategist warns that North DeKalb numbers aren’t where Democrats would like them to be:
North DeKalb numbers are not where we'd like to see them. Morning was fine, I'm guessing the rain depressed the evening vote. #ga06 #gapol
— StefanTurk (@StefanTurk) June 20, 2017
Update 8:06 PM ET: Ossoff 50.6% leads Handel 49.3%
Nate Cohn:
Ossoff with about a 1.5 point lead in the in-person early vote. That's about a pt worse than we expected. But wait for other vote methods.
— Nate Cohn (@Nate_Cohn) June 21, 2017
Update: Handel Leads Ossoff 50.4% to 49.6%
Update: Ossoff leads Handel 50.3% to 49.6
Update: Handel leads Ossoff 51.1% to 49.9%
Election model projecting a 4 point Karen Handel win:
Model is projecting a 4-point Handel win, based on fully reporting precincts #GA06 https://t.co/ehoR683tCw
— G. Elliott Morris📈 (@gelliottmorris) June 21, 2017
On the other hand:
Quite possible #GA06 comes down to mail ballots. Campaigns should deploy mail ballot observers to election offices (if not already there)
— Michael McDonald (@ElectProject) June 21, 2017
Update: 8:49 PM ET: Handel leads Ossoff 50.7% to 49.3%.
Update 8:58 PM ET: Handel leads Ossoff 51.1% to 48.9%
Update: Handel leads Ossoff 52.7% to 47.3%.
Update: Handel leads Ossoff 52.2% to 46.8%
Steve Kornacki, the Grim Reaper of Democratic special election hopes, strikes again:
Handel winning same-day vote 58-42%. Lost early vote 50.7-49.3%.
— Steve Kornacki (@SteveKornacki) June 21, 2017
Update: Handel leads Ossoff 53%-47%.
