Trump sent his own lawyer Jay Sekulow to Fox News Sunday with the message that the President isn’t under criminal investigation, but the lawyer lost it and ended up admitting twice that Trump is under investigation.

Sekulow said, “The President takes action based on numerous events including recommendations for his attorney general and deputy attorney general’s office. He takes the action that they also by the way recommended, and now he’s being investigated by the Department of Justice because the special counsel under the special counsel regulations reports still to the Department of Justice, not an independent counsel, so he’s being investigated for taking the action that the attorney general and deputy attorney general recommended him to take by the agency who recommended the termination, so that’s the constitutional threshold question here, so that’s why I said no investigation.”
Wallace replied, “What’s the question? You stated some facts. First of all, you’ve now stated that he is being investigated after saying he isn’t.
Sekulow, “No, he’s not being investigated.”
Wallace came back with, “You just said, sir that he is being investigated.”
Sekulow went into damage control mode, “No, Chris, I said, let me crystal clear so that you completely understand. We have not received nor are we aware of any investigation of the President Of The United States. Period.”
Wallace replied, “Sir, you just said two times that he’s being investigated.”
Sekulow rambled some legal gibberish about the context of the tweet and legal theory of how the Constitution works, but the damage was already beyond done. Sekulow accused Wallace of rephrashing him, and Chris Wallace said that the tape will speak for itself.
Trump’s lawyer is both claiming that the investigation is bogus, and that there is no investigation in the same answer. No matter how one slices it, this was a bad performance by Sekulow whose sole mission on the Sunday shows was to deny the existance of an investigation, but who somhow ended up admitting that there was an investigation then denying that the investigation exists.
Donald Trump already admitted that he is under investigation, Sekulow’s interview of someone who works for Trump trying to clean up the mess that the President caused. Trump’s mouth is the reason why there might not be a lawyer in the world who is capable of stopping the President from self-destructing and taking his entire administration down.
