The Trump budget proposes cutting $800 billion from Medicaid which would result in 10 million Americans losing their health care.
The Washington Post reported, “For Medicaid, the state-federal program that provides health care to low-income Americans, Trump’s budget plan would follow through on a bill passed by House Republicans to cut more than $800 billion over 10 years. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that this could cut off Medicaid benefits for about 10 million people over the next decade.”
Senate Democratic Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said in a statement provided to PoliticusUSA that Trump’s budget is in the fast lane to being rejected by both parties in Congress, “In yet another broken promise to working people, President Trump’s budget pulls the rug out from so many who need help: those suffering from opioid and heroin addiction, people in nursing homes and their families who may now have to care for them, the elderly, the disabled, and children. This budget continues to reveal President Trump’s true colors: His populist campaign rhetoric was just a Trojan horse to execute long-held, hard-right policies that benefit the ultra-wealthy at the expense of the middle class. This budget is taking the fast lane to rejection by the American people and both parties in Congress.
The fact that the administration would propose these cuts shows that they don’t believe that there will be political consequences for their behavior. Voters must send Trump and any Republican a resounding message first in the special elections that are taking place in 2017, and in the midterm elections in 2018.
There must be a punishment for attempting to take away health care from millions of Americans.
The Trump budget may die in Congress, but the ideology behind them is what must be guarded against and stopped.
