New DNC Chair Tom Perez shows that he’s on message, telling MSNBC Sessions should resign, “The rule of law is the rule of law. Nobody is above the law.”
Perez was quoting Sessions himself, of course. Back when Sessions thought perjury was worth putting a president on trial over. That is to say, when a Democrat was in the White House.
Just in case anyone had any doubts about how Perez would handle the new position, he handled this appearance deftly. Instead of sounding partisan, Perez read from the transcript of of the question read to Sessions during the confirmation hearings.
Senator Leahy asked in a questionnaire, “Several of the President-elect’s nominees or senior advisers have Russian ties. Have you been in contact with anyone connected to any part of the Russian government about the 2016 election, either before or after election day?”
After reading that written question out loud, Perez said of Sessions, “He gave a one word answer: ‘No.'”
There is also the moment between Senator Al Franken and Sessions, where Franken asked, “If there was any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of this (2016) campaign, what would you do?”
Jeff Sessions replied, “I’m not aware of any of those activities. I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians.”
Tom Perez made a compelling, fact-based case for the need for Sessions to resign. It’s sad that patriotism is now seen as a Democratic message, but there you have it.
Democrats are trying to protect America, whether one agrees with them policy wise or not. Republicans are trying to protect the Kremlin, so even if one agrees with their corporate first message, this might be a bridge too far.
The only people making this threat to the United States a partisan issue are the Republicans who are too cowardly to put America first.
