President-elect Trump is planning on cutting the nation’s intelligence agencies in another move that is a direct sellout designed to empower Russia and Putin.
The Wall Street Journal reported, “President-elect Donald Trump, a harsh critic of U.S. intelligence agencies, is working with top advisers on a plan that would restructure and pare back the nation’s top spy agency, people familiar with the planning said, prompted by a belief that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence has become bloated and politicized….One of the people familiar with Mr. Trump’s planning said advisers also are working on a plan to restructure the Central Intelligence Agency, cutting back on staffing at its Virginia headquarters and pushing more people out into field posts around the world. The CIA declined to comment on the plan.”
One can make a compelling argument that the intelligence agencies have become too bloated after the post-9/11 additions, but coming from a Trump team that is openly hostile to the nation’s intelligence community, the plan looks like an effort to weaken a national intelligence apparatus that Trump refuses to listen to, or believe.
The best way to head off a potential investigation into the role that the Russian election interference played in the outcome of the 2016 election would be to weaken the agencies that would be responsible for the investigation.
If Trump cuts the CIA and the intelligence community, the American people should be asking what Trump’s sources of information will be? Is he going to pick up his intelligence from watching cable news? Is going to rely on Putin and Russia to keep him informed?
The plan to cut the intelligence community will weaken the United States around the world while empowering Russia. A slashed national intelligence system will also make America less safe and potentially more susceptible terrorist attacks.
Instead of making America great, it appears that Trump is weakening the country while selling us out to Putin.
