As the world continues to mourn the results of last week’s presidential election, more news about Donald Trump’s pending presidency continues to pour in – and none of it looks too good.
Monday proved to be no exception.
According to CBS News, the president-elect wants his children and son-in-law to have access to the nation’s most top-secret information, meaning they would have to be officially designated as “national security advisers.”
It should be noted that none of Trump’s kids, like their father, have any government or foreign policy experience.
The report via CBS:
President-elect Donald Trump is potentially seeking top secret security clearances for his children, sources tell CBS News.
The Trump team has asked the White House to explore the possibility of getting his children the top secret security clearances. Logistically, the children would need to be designated by the current White House as national security advisers to their father to receive top secret clearances. However, once Mr. Trump becomes president, he would be able to put in the request himself.
His children would need to fill out the security questionnaire (SF-86) and go through the requisite background checks.
While nepotism rules prevent the president-elect from hiring his kids to work in the White House, they do not need to be government officials to receive top secret security clearances.
The president-elect’s children – Eric, Donald Jr., and Ivanka – and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are already members of Trump’s transition team and will help set up his administration. His kids will also be taking over their dad’s business.
As of this hour, I’m hearing no outrage over this clear conflict of interest from the same folks who spent an entire campaign season excoriating Hillary Clinton for her supposed – and nonexistent – conflicts when it came to her work as Secretary of State.
Of course, the news that Trump’s three kids could have access to our nation’s highest secrets is hardly the only piece of disturbing piece of information we’ve learned about the next president’s administration.
White supremacist Steve Bannon will also have President Trump’s ear as the Chief White House Strategist, much to the delight of former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.
“I think that’s excellent,” Duke said, according to CNN. “It’s good to see that he’s sticking to the issues and the ideas that he proposed as a candidate.”
We learn more each day about what Trump’s presidency will look like, and it’s shaping up to be as terrifying as many of us thought it would be.
