While speaking to reporters after touring the Louisiana flood damage, President Obama kept Americans focused on the long-term needs of the victims, and in contrast to Donald Trump, did not treat his tour like a photo-op.
Video:
The President said, “Sometimes once the flood waters pass, people’s attention spans pass. This is not a one off. This is not a photo-op issue. This is how do you make sure that a month from now, three months from now, six months from now, people still are getting the help that they need. I need all Americans to stay focused on this. If you’re watching this today, make sure that you find out how you can help. You can go to volunteers.louisiana.gov, or you can go to fema.gov, or you can go to whitehouse.gov. We’ll tell you. We’ll direct you how you can help.”
A real president doesn’t fly in after a natural disaster, sign a few baseball caps, promise to solve everything, stage a photo op with a box of Play-Doh, and then fly home.
Presidential leadership is about using the national stage to direct the country’s attention towards important issues. It is about keeping the nation focused on the long-term. It is about getting people the help they need and making sure that help is available for as long as they need it.
Being president is about leading the most powerful country in the world.
President Obama demonstrated what real presidential leadership looks like, and in the process made Donald Trump look a carny showman who is trying to fool voters into thinking that he is fit for the Oval Office.
