New ‘Crystal Ball’ Projection Shows Clinton Speeding Past 270 Electoral Votes

Hillary Clinton has now cleared the all-important 270 electoral vote mark in her contest against Donald Trump, according to a new analysis released today by the Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball.

The website’s latest projection shows Clinton expanding her electoral lead over Trump. She is now predicted to win 348 electoral votes to the Republican nominee’s 190.

While the overall electoral vote total for Clinton has only increased by one since March, many of them have gone from “lean” to “likely” Clinton, meaning her support is solidifying as we approach the home stretch.

For the first time in their projections, the Democratic nominee crosses the critical 270 electoral vote mark.

Larry J. Sabato, Kyle Kondik and Geoffrey Skelley write today:

We are putting Clinton over the 270-mark in the Electoral College (273 electoral votes, to be precise) with states we have classified as Likely Democratic or Safe Democratic. Clinton had previously been at 269 in those categories. To us, this means that Trump has to find a way not just to sweep all Republican states and the remaining states classified Leans Democratic (see our map, below) but to dislodge at least one Likely or Safe Democratic state. Anything can happen over the next dozen weeks, but we wouldn’t recommend betting your children’s college funds on a Trump administration.

Trump’s campaign had an uphill climb to begin with as Democrats would have enjoyed an electoral college advantage no matter who the Republican candidate was. But with each passing day, the situation in Trumpland gets increasingly dire.

The Republican nominee’s recent staff shake-up seems to be an acknowledgement that the numbers just aren’t adding up for Trump. There aren’t enough angry, low-educated white voters to give him the presidency.

But instead of restructuring his campaign in a way that signals an attempt to turn things around, the addition of people like Roger Ailes and Steve Bannon suggest that Trump is positioning himself for a post-campaign media venture.

If the math continues to look like this, Trump will have plenty of time after the election to negotiate a contract with Fox News.
