Democrats aren’t going to be satisfied with beating Donald Trump. The Democrats are aiming higher. Victory isn’t enough. They want to destroy the man and his racist movement.
The New York Times reported:
Democrats, prompted by Mr. Trump’s latest antics and the string of Republicans who have spoken out against him, have, perhaps prematurely, started discussing a loftier goal than just winning in November: a wide margin of victory, driven by a record turnout among black, Latino and young voters, that could help squash Mr. Trump’s movement.
David Plouffe, President Obama’s former campaign manager, proposed the idea in June. “It is not enough to simply beat Trump,” he wrote on Twitter. “He must be destroyed thoroughly. His kind must not rise again.”
It may seem premature, but it is important for the Democratic Party to aim high in this election. Democrats have an opportunity to change the face of the American electorate and crush the hate filled rhetoric of Trump.
This election is more important than just winning the White House. Trump has turned the 2016 contest into a referendum on who the United States is as a country, and if Americans of good conscience will stand up for our common values as a people.
Trump’s candidacy is the outgrowth of years of Republican appeals to racism and bigotry. Democrats see a chance to squash Trump’s appeals to the ugly underbelly of American culture, and they are going to take it.
