It has gotten so bad for Donald Trump that even Newt Gingrich is saying that he may turn down the VP slot if it is offered.
Gingrich told NBC that he may turn down Trump if he offers him the VP spot:
Newt Gingrich was Donald Trump’s safety date, and he may turn Trump down because he has a book and a movie coming out. There really isn’t a more lame excuse than, sorry, but see I’ve got this book coming out, so I am going to be really busy until November.
Candidates have books coming out while they are campaigning all of the time, so Newt’s excuse makes no sense. There are two possibilities. Either Gingrich has been told that he is not going to be the pick, or he is trying to make sure that he is not chosen.
Trump has had an impossible time finding anyone outside of Chris Christie, who wants to be his VP, and Christie really really wants the job. He would shut down every bridge in New Jersey if that is what it took to be Trump’s VP nominee. It has also been widely reported that Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is lusting after the chance to be on the ticket.
Outside of Christie and Pence, there hasn’t been a huge line of Republicans competing to be Trump’s running mate. Joni Ernst and Bob Corker took themselves out of the running, and no Republican with a future wants to go within 100 miles of the toxic nominee.
If Newt Gingrich doesn’t want the job, then it looks like nobody wants to be Trump’s VP.
