Republicans were hoping to email scandal fireworks, but they got a dud, as Hillary Clinton’s campaign announced that the former Sec. of State voluntarily sat down with the FBI for an interview on Saturday.
In a brief statement, Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill said, “Secretary Clinton gave a voluntary interview this morning about her email arrangements while she was Secretary. She is pleased to have had the opportunity to assist the Department of Justice in bringing this review to a conclusion. Out of respect for the investigative process, she will not comment further on her interview.”
The fact that Clinton gave the FBI a voluntary interview is consistent with what she has been saying all along. The former Sec. of State did nothing illegal. She has no reason not to talk to the FBI. Clinton wanted to get everything wrapped up before the Democratic convention, and that is exactly what happened.
What Republicans were hoping for was a story that they could spin in an attempt to make voters care about her emails. What they got was voluntary meeting that looks more like a standard inquiry than the tip of an investigation that will result in charges.
First, Benghazi and now the email scandal are falling apart for Republicans. The general election hasn’t officially started yet, but the Republican Clinton scandals are dropping like flies.
