Due to the high volume of complaints received, New York’s attorney general has opened an investigation into potential voting irregularities during the state’s Democratic and Republican primaries.
Here is the statement from New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announcing the probe:
Before the voters were counted in the state, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders blasted the closed primary system in New York:
Sanders also mentioned the long voting lines and voter purges, ““It is absurd that in Brooklyn, New York, where I was born, tens of thousands of people as I understand it have been purged from the voting rolls. It’s a little bit crazy that in upstate New York they open the polls at noon. What happens to people who get up early in the morning and have to go to work?”
Due to the high level of complaints, the attorney general should investigate. The fact that Independents can’t vote in closed primaries was no hidden secret, but the voter purges are very troubling if true. No matter which candidate you support in any election, voter purges or anything that is done to suppress the vote are not acceptable.
If the voter purges are confirmed, New York needs to fix their clean up their electoral system to make sure that no one is ever denied their legal right to vote.
