Over 100,000 people have signed a ColorofChange petition demanding that Coca-Cola dump the RNC and Donald Trump by ending their sponsorship of the Republican convention.
How can Coca-Cola, a company that heavily markets to and profits from Black people, fund a platform for a presidential nominee that is being bolstered into office by former Grand Wizard David Duke, the KKK, and other white supremacists?
These companies are stuck pretending that their sponsorship won’t provide a platform for Trump’s dehumanizing hate speech. But when corporate dollars are used to fund a platform for a demagogue who promotes a violently anti-Black message that company is just as culpable as the person shouting.
ColorofChange and their partners Care2 and MoveOn have gathered over 180,000 total signatures. The Trump supporter who punched a protester at a Trump rally was just one physical manifestation of the violence that Donald Trump’s hateful rhetoric inspires. By sponsoring the Republican convention in any way, Coke is sponsoring racism, bigotry, and violence.
The company that once advertised that they’d like to buy the world a Coke and teach it to sing in perfect harmony is now sponsoring a man who is running for president on a platform of fear, racism, and hatred.
If Coke wants to sponsor Donald Trump’s Republican convention, they need to understand that there will be a price to be paid with consumers for their decision. Those who sponsor Trump’s racism are just as guilty as the Trump supporter who punched the African-American protester.
