Ohio Republican Governor John Kasich willingly surrendered his moderate image today when he said he had an army of people and many women who left their kitchens to go out and put yard signs up “back when things were different.”
Oh, Republican nostalgia, please be quieter.
Watch here:
Video:
Kasich said, “We’ve just got an army of people who um, and many women who left their kitchens to go out and to go door to door and to put yard signs up all the way back when things were different. Now, you call homes and everybody’s out working.”
Things have been “different” for a long time, and it’s not clear what purpose references women leaving their kitchens serves for Gov. Kasich, other than to cozy up to the angry Archies in his party while at the same time revealing that he isn’t the moderate he appears to be.
At least one of Kasich’s female supporters felt the need to correct the Governor, telling him that she will be supporting him but she won’t be coming out of the kitchen to do it. Ouch.
The Kasich camp tried to make this all go away by conflating kitchens with campaigns:
But that is fooling no one. It actually brings to mind the Romney misstep of Binders Full Of Women.
Kasich has so far been thought of as the most reasonable of the Republican candidates running for president, but this comment reveals that we are now grading on a very steep curve. “Reasonable” and “moderate” mean not totally crazy, they don’t actually mean reasonable or moderate.
Republicans just love to insult women. When they’re not doing it with their policies, they’re opening their mouths to reveal a bit too much about their real feelings about women.
