Kentucky Democratic Senatorial candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes’ campaign issued a statement that they are “proud to announce that President Bill Clinton will be in Kentucky for his first stop of the 2014 cycle later this month.” On Tuesday, February 25, President Clinton will visit Louisville to campaign for Alison Lundergan Grimes, the current Kentucky Secretary of State.
Yes, that’s right. The Big Dog is coming to Kentucky to take a bite outta Mitch.
“We appreciate President Clinton’s friendship and are excited that he is making our campaign a top priority,” Grimes senior adviser Jonathan Hurst said Friday. “We’re proud to have the President as a key part of this campaign.”
In the latest Bluegrass poll, Grimes leads McConnell 46-42. Kentucky really doesn’t like Mitch McConnell.
President Clinton making Kentucky his first stop in 2014 suggests that Democrats are prioritizing this race, and they see it as winnable. Kentucky is in play. Democrats will send Clinton back again and again if they need him — and they will, once McConnell starts playing dirty pool with his dark money.
In July of 2013, Clinton told Americans why he was proud to support Grimes:
Believe it or not, Grimes is the only Kentucky Senate candidate with a jobs plan. She’s been challenging Mitch McConnell to come up with any kind of actual jobs plan (other than “deregulate!”) to no avail. McConnell keeps avoiding the issue, no doubt planning on dropping a dirty bomb on Grimes later in the campaign in order to distract from his policy failures.
But Mitch is no match for Bill Clinton when it comes to messaging power.
