Right Wing Talk Radio Hits the Panic Button on Day 2 of Sotomayor’s Hearing

Last updated on August 10th, 2014 at 05:13 pm

Up and down the radio dial today, right wing talkers are into full panic mode over the Senate confirmation hearing of Obama Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. Rush Limbaugh claimed that he had to stop watching because she was “scary.” Michael Savage called her a, “windbag liar,” while Dennis Miller went for the cheap joke and labeled her, “Roseanne Barrio.”

Here is the audio of Limbaugh from Media Matters:

Limbaugh said, “I’ll tell you what though I had to turn it off. The woman’s scary. No not the way she looks, the stuff she’s saying, she making it up. The stuff she said in her speeches, oh it doesn’t matter. She’s exactly who we know she is.”

Savage called Sotomayor a liar:

Savage said, “She’s a windbag liar in my opinion. I don’t care what you think of what I just said…She said to white people drop dead, based on race you’re not getting anywhere. What do you want to cover this up? Now she is already playing Miss Moderate. The task of a judge is not make law it is to apply the law, and my record shows my rigorous attempt to wreck the Constitution according to my terms is what she should have said…This is a repeat of Ruth Bader Ginsburg all over again, with the same Republican types once again ushering in a radical extremist.”
Here is Dennis Miller:

Miller said, “I am looking at her right now. She is not a dead on for Roseanne Barr. It’s Roseanne Barrio.” Is it just me, or did Dennis Miller stop being funny once he became a, “serious conservative.” Then again, there are plenty of people who would argue that Dennis Miller never was funny, especially on Monday Night Football.

Right wing talk radio has no real reason to contest Sotomayor’s nomination, so they have fallen back on their old standby of making the minority scary to white people. Even though these comments hurt the Republican Party at large, you have to remember who these hosts are talking to. Their audiences are largely older white male Republicans, a.k.a. the same people who didn’t see a problem with nomination McCain for president last year.

It is no surprise that the righties are in full panic mode. Their audience thrives on being afraid. Fear is what motivates the current Republican Party. In this respect the GOP is still holding on to the political tactics which allowed them to rule through fear after 9/11. The sad part is that many Republicans will buy into the message of Limbaugh and Savage that the idea that a minority in a position of power is something to fear.
