Sen. Kennedy’s office has released a statement saying that Kennedy is currently in the hospital and being evaluated. The statement said that after consultation with his doctors, Kennedy decided to go to Boston for an evaluation this morning.
Kennedy has a strong supporter of Barack Obama, and has been a key campaigner in this year’s Democratic primary campaign. Over the past week, Kennedy was fighting in the US Senate to get a bill passed that would have allowed first responders to collectively bargain.
Kennedy is the last bastion of 1960’s liberalism remaining in the Senate. This does not mean that Kennedy did not or would not work with Republicans. In fact, over the last 15 years or so, Kennedy has gone from being the poster child for the left to someone who has moved to the center on many issues.
Kennedy’s condition as being described as stroke like symptoms which is the standard description for a stroke whose severity has not yet been determined. In the next 48 hours doctors will be able to determine the severity of the stroke.
According to the National Stroke Association, strokes are the third leading cause of death and the number one cause of adult disability in the United States. While it is possible to completely recover from a stroke, 2/3 of all suffers will be left with some form of disability.
